Decisions, decisions, decisions… How many decisions do you make every
day? Some experts say that we make
hundreds, sometimes thousands of decisions every day. The decisions we make
range from minor day-to-day decisions up to life-changing decisions and
everything in between.
Let me
share with you how I learned to make tough decisions with one easy formula.
After losing my corporate job in 2010, I decided to change careers. This
decision involved a series of life events, and it was not easy. In fact, no matter how many tricks you have
up your sleeve, whenever you make a life decision that will change your destiny,
it will cause you significant stress. If
you are a human like me, you probably doubt yourself and go around asking the
advice of the people you trust. In my
case, I asked:
·
My smartest friend: Everybody should have a smart friend.
·
My creative friend: She always finds a creative way out.
·
My magician friend: She always has a magic wand to make things
happen...and
·
My coach / mentor friend: She always guides me
to find my own solutions. I explained my
issue to her (what if I, because I should, but….) and after I took a breath, my
coach said: “What I hear you saying is that you need to make a “life or death”
decision.” That’s easy -- Just flip a coin and you’ll get your answer.
After listening to my coach’s advice, I decided to reduce the options to
two:
- . Change my career path or
- . Stay on my current career path.
Having too many options it’s overwhelming and does not help to make
decisions at all. There are always two options.
Should I stay or should I change.
Because I know, each of you at
some point will have to make a tough decision allow me to share with you an
easy 3-step formula. I am also am providing you a worksheet that you can use
when you need.
The idea of a decision starts in our minds and the process begins when we ask the question, what do I want?
The idea of a decision starts in our minds and the process begins when we ask the question, what do I want?
1.
Answer the question; what do I want?
2.
Listened to your heart, write down two options.
·
Using the two-column list, write the pros and
cons under each possibility.
3.
Confirm with your guts; answering the question,
why do I want it?
·
After considering that, which one weights more?
·
If you have doubts, Re-confirm your decision by flipping
a coin! Did you get what you wanted?
The reason why we flipped the coin is because if we get the side of the
coin we want, we would feel happy and at peace.
But if we don’t, we will start thinking of reasons why we need to flip
the coin again in hope that we get the option that deep in our heart we want.
Do you agree that
making decisions is not that hard so far? Good.
I invite all of you to use this formula:
MIND + HEART + GUTS when making tough decisions in
your life. I guarantee you that by engaging the intelligence of your mind
listening to your heart and getting in touch with the wisdom of your gut, you
will find your compass in any decision you make.
Hasta entonces, Empodera tu Grandeza.
